When I was fourteen I strayed from the fold,
Got lost in the Badlands, day and night in the cold.
A medicine woman came to me in a dream
I swear, I was awake when she said to me:
The land is a prayer and church is the sky,
An open cathedral, a natural choir,
The wind in my face, the twilight at dusk,
The earth is the house God made for us.
I jumped to my feet, I gave thanks to the skies, and
Thanks to the ground where I slept, to the tears in my eyes.
In one holy moment, I saw everything new.
And said, "There you are God, I've been looking for you"
The land is a prayer and church is the sky,
An open cathedral, a natural choir,

Back in the city, my troubled mind is calm.
God must have been here in my heart all along
